Cheaper Home Batteries Program Overview

  • Launch Date: 1 July 2025
  • Total Funding: $2.3 billion
  • Objective: To install one million battery systems by 2030, enhancing energy independence and reducing electricity bills
  • Discount Offered: Approximately 30% off the upfront cost of eligible battery installations

✅ Eligibility Criteria

  • Who Can Apply: Residential homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities
  • Battery Size Requirements:
    • Nominal Capacity: Between 5 kWh and 100 kWh
    • Rebate Applies To: Up to 50 kWh of usable capacity
  • System Requirements:
    • Battery and inverter must be on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved product list
    • Must comply with Australian Standard AS/NZS 5139:2019
  • Installation Requirements:
    • Installed by or supervised by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accredited installer
    • Must comply with state and territory electrical safety regulations
  • Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Capability: On-grid systems must be VPP-capable (participation optional)
  • Off-Grid Systems: Eligible if located ≥1 km from the grid or connection costs exceed $30,000

💰 Financial Incentives

  • Rebate Calculation: Based on Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) tied to usable battery capacity
  • Estimated Rebate Values:
    • 2025: Approximately $350 per kWh (9.3 STCs per kWh)
    • Rebate value decreases annually until program ends in 2030
  • Example Savings:
    • An 11.5 kWh system may receive ~$4,000 rebate
    • Annual electricity bill savings: $700–$1,600 (of which $300–$900 from battery)

📅 Important Dates

  • Program Start: 1 July 2025
  • Program End: 31 December 2030
  • Note: Batteries installed before 1 July 2025 may be eligible if commissioned after that date
